Indeed, as a Black, gay opera singer raised in Virginia, Tines has often explored issues of race and racial identity in his work: Last summer, he starred in The Black Clown at Lincoln Center, a layered work of musical theater adapted from a poem by Langston Hughes; and in 2017, he premiered Were You There, a song cycle about police brutality, at the I’m With Skeleton Halloween shirt But I will love this American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Practiced as he is in the standard classical repertoire (he studied at Juilliard after graduating from Harvard in 2009), Tines has identified in contemporary pieces an urgency and specificity that better suit his priorities as an artist. “In the classical world, things can get real stale or stodgy, because people divorce themselves from the impetus for doing the work,” says Tines, now largely based in Raleigh, North Carolina. “As a performer, and needing to be present and active in creating and performing, I always want to know, ‘Why are we here? Why am I singing these words? Why am I standing in front of these people trying to sing something?’ That’s really clear with new music.”

What he proposed, beyond “Vigil,” were works by Jessie Montgomery, Samuel Barber, and Caroline Shaw (a frequent collaborator of Kanye West’s); and taken together, they form a haunting yet ultimately hopeful allegory. First, a universe is created in Montgomery’s “Starburst”; then, in Barber’s “Dover Beach”—inspired by the Matthew Arnold poem—a narrator considers the world’s natural beauty, and how human conflict is ruining it. With Shaw’s “By and By” and “O Death” come the dream of entering heaven and the appearance of the specter of death, which, as Tines describes it, “knocks on this person’s door and threatens them and then kills them”—a scene that he likens to the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor.
